Spot the impact of covid-19 per municipality in Italy
The Covid-19 emergency and the role of the press
By: Andrii Elyiv, Nikhil Aggarwal and Aldo Visibelli
In the last 4 months the world changed drastically and media outlets started to shift their attention on the Covid-19 emergency. Analyzing a sample of millions of news recently published, collected and aggregated by our crawler, our results showed that about 98% of the articles dealt the topic “Coronavirus” / “Covid-19”. The number of sick and the number of victims were some of the most frequent topics. However, data and statistics on the number of cases per country appear to contain some relevant discrepancies.
Discrepancies on the number of covid-19 cases puts pressure on media outlets to source reliable data. Discrepancies between information disclosed and the lack of clarity on delicate and at the same time vital issues have led us to provide data-driven information and representations drawn from reliable sources to both local and international newspapers & magazines, to support them in the process of publishing useful and truthful data. In fact, our team of data scientists has graphically represented the difference between the total number of deaths in March 2019 in each municipality of Italy against the total number of deaths in 2020. The idea was to analyze and represent the increase or decrease in the number of pre and post Coronavirus deaths, thus providing highly relevant data to media outlets.
«We employed ISTAT data to create a map visually represeting Z-scores reflecting the change in deaths between the 1st and the 21st of March 2019 and the 1st and the 21st of March 2020 per comune in Italy”
Z-score represents the ratio between the excess in % of deaths between 2020 & 2019 to its statistical error (standard deviation). The analysis, as mentioned above, is comparing data on the number of deaths between the 1st and the 21st of March 2019 and the 1st and the 21st of March 2020 per comune in Italy. Green signals a minor decrease in deaths (-1.7σ to -0.5σ). Grey signals no major changes in deaths (-0.5σ to + 0.5σ). Yellow signals a minor increase in deaths (+ 0.5σ to + 1σ). Orange signals a moderate increase in deaths (+1σ to + 2σ). Red signals a significant increase in deaths (+2σ to + 3σ). Black signals a drastic increase in deaths (>3σ).
